Why we built Kiyevun

One app for the people who teach in the Maldives, and the families who trust them with their children.

The story

Tuition in the Maldives runs on WhatsApp groups, notebooks and memory. A teacher marks a register on paper and copies it out later. A parent asks how their child is doing and gets an answer three days after the class. A month's fees are worked out at the end of the month, from memory, and nobody has a receipt.

None of that is anyone's fault. The software that exists was built for schools in other countries, priced for them, and written in a language half the families here do not read comfortably. So teachers do it by hand, because by hand at least works.

Kiyevun started from one measurement: how long a teacher will actually spend on admin at the end of a class. The answer is about thirty seconds. Anything longer gets skipped, and software that gets skipped is worse than none, because now the record is half true.

What we will not do

Where we are

Kiyevun is early and built in the open with the teachers using it. If something is wrong, or missing, or simply annoying, tell us — that is how most of what is here got made.
